WinX DVD Ripper Platinum V6.9.0 Review

Digiarty Software, the creator of the popular DVD ripping solution WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, has released a new update of the software just a couple of weeks ago. Interestingly, I have tested such software back in 2010 so I decided to give it again another try, especially this time that I have also upgraded my OS to Windows 8 Release Preview. Though I already found it a perfect DVD ripping solution back then, I’m excited to see what Digiarty Software brings to the table with the newest version, that is, the WinX DVD Ripper Platinum V6.9.0. In any case you missed it, particularly those who are new here in CTB, I actually reviewed before the previous version (V5.9.2). You may check out my review of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum V5.9.2 here.

What is WinX DVD Ripper Platinum?

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 6.9.0 Main UI

For the uninitiated, WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is basically a DVD ripping software, hence the name, that is capable of ripping contents of DVD discs so you can save such contents on other devices using various file types. These file types are for multimedia playback such as AVI, MP4, H.264, MPEG, WMV, MOV, FLV, 3GP, and etc. It may sound very technical for some, but in a nutshell, the WinX DVD Ripper Platinum allows you to rip DVD contents (like videos and music, or even ISO image files) so you can have it playable across several devices like Apple TV, iPhone, iPods and other MP3 players, iPad, GALAXY Tabs and other Android tablets, HTC smartphones, Samsung handsets, and more. WinX DVD Ripper Platinum runs only in Windows platform though, but there’s actually another version of the same name designed for Macs. Digiarty Software’s product page for WinX DVD Ripper Platinum says the software is compatible with Windows 98 up to Windows 7 – but I can personally attest it also works seamlessly with Windows 8.

Installation

The User Interface (UI)

If there’s one feature of a DVD ripper software that initially attracts the users, it’s none other than the user interface or UI. The UI must be so intuitive in a way that users can use it out of the box. Digiarty Software might have this design perspective in mind given the fact that the new version of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum offers a simple yet intuitive interface.

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum UI

Though I’m personally not sure how many times already Digiarty Software released updates for WinX DVD Ripper Platinum in the past 2 years, it’s very evident how it revamped the software’s interface from V5.9.2 to V6.9.0. Below is a comparison of the UI between the previous and the latest version of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum.

As you can see, V6.9.0’s interface (right) is made even better and seamless and that makes it easier to use even for none technically-savvy users. At the top are the bolder icons which allow users to select files to be ripped, be it from a Disc drive, an existing ISO image file, or from the computer’s folder. There’s also a “Clear” button that basically clears whatever file has been loaded into the software. The “Options” icon is where the users change values of every output file like changing values for video format, video resolution, frame rate, and audio quality of an iPod-playable file.

The lower-half portion of the interface is a range of outputs to be selected. Each output has its own default values which, of course, you can modify according to your preference.

Functionality, Features, and Performance

A perfect DVD ripper solution must really perform its desired tasks and should deliver good results. The WinX DVD Ripper Platinum was designed with a main feature and functionality, that is “to rip” contents from a DVD disc, and needless to say – it does perform such functionality and deliver good results, at least with the tests I have done on my PC.

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 6.9.0 - Movie Preview

I have this “Hijacked” movie starred by Randy Couture; it’s a 1 hour and 30 minutes movie that I ripped to AVI and MP4. I chose to rip such movie to AVI (in DivX format) ‘coz I want it to be added to my digital movie collection for the NAS Media Center I have.

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 6.9.0 - DVD to AVI

Though at this point I can’t compare yet how’s the performance of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum fair against the other DVD ripper solutions available in the market, I must say that to rip a 1 hour and 30 minutes DVD movie to AVI format in 17 minutes (based on my own experiment) to complete the job – Digiarty Software deserves to boast what they offer is truly and utterly good solution to rip DVD to AVI.

Using the same DVD movie, I’ve also tested the performance of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum in ripping its contents to iPod, iPhone, and iPad-playable format. Basically, such iOS devices uses the same output file (MP4), only that each file varies default video quality. The default iPad MP4 file for instance has higher video resolution (640×480) compared to iPhone or iPod MP4 files (480×320).

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 6.9.0 - DVD to MP4 (iPhone)

Because MP4 is a more compressed file compared to AVI, I could expect WinX DVD Ripper Platinum to complete the job in a much shorter time. And without any doubt, the software was able to rip DVD to iPhone and iPad MP4 video formats in more or less 5 and 10 minutes, respectively. Not bad particularly when you’re in hurry, right? Below is a screenshot that shows how WinX DVD Ripper Platinum compressed each file format when ripping contents from a DVD.

Price

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is available for download for new users at $45.95. Interestingly, Digiarty Software, slashed the price off down to $35.95 for a limited time. But if you found it still a bit pricey, a free version is also available for download. You may get your free DVD ripper via the link.

Verdict

Though I’ve only tested a single DVD movie to be ripped to at least 2 video output formats (AVI and MP4), I believe it sufficed to attest the WinX DVD Ripper Platinum performs its functionality and features as expected. I’m personally a huge fan of clean yet intuitive user interface, and the combination of bluish and greyish colours makes it a cool design theme and easy on the eyes. But what really matters most is a less-buggy or bug-free DVD ripper software that truly delivers what the company promised to offer. And Digiarty Software nailed it down with its latest version of the software, that is, the WinX DVD Ripper Platinum V6.9.0.
