Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III Facebook Fan Page Removed, Did Facebook Force You to “Like” the New One?

One reason why I love this country is the fact that we have the freedom to publish anything lawful to the web without being censored by the Philippine government firewall, if there’s any.
Social media is becoming the driving force of information to reach the public. One form for example is the use of Social Networking site services like Facebook Fan/Like Pages, where people keep track the activities and updates of individuals, organizations, products, or services they “Liked” or follow.

Early this morning, I read an article over at that the original Facebook Fan Page of President Benigno Aquino at was shutdown, alleged under the request of the current administration. That surprised me though, as that implicates the reason why I don’t see regular direct news feeds on my FB wall from, a blog site maintained by the same individuals who were behind the original Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III Facebook Page. Now, the official Facebook page of the President of the Philippines is located here:

Technically and legally, there’s no question if the government indeed requested Facebook to put down the first fan page. It was just created by volunteers who once supported the President during the campaign, and there exist a violation to the Facebook Management policy that only official representative of an individual can create a Facebook Page. No argument. Except the concern to give just a little respect to those individuals who once helped and supported the candidacy of President Aquino. The catch is, where did the new official Facebook page got a whopping number of fans in just a matter of days? Is it not from the first original fan page? Let’s examine…

This is the snapshot of original fan page created by the folks at, which gained more than 2.2 million fans, the biggest so far for a particular page in the country. It was on Google’s cache as it appeared on November 8, 2010, 2:06:20 GMT.

Did Facebook force you to like the new Official Page? Well, probably yes. If you opted to become a fan of the original yet unofficial page which completely disappeared, you may check the new one here . Now see if there exists the cool blue thumb to “Like” the page, if none- then you are forced on liking the new official page. And I’m not sure if Facebook really cares your willingness to “Like”. Of course it’s a different page, you still have the right reserved either to “Like” the page or not.
