The much anticipated $35 laptop which broke the news last July is expected to be out in India by January next year.
According to LiveMint, the computer services firm HCL Technologies, Ltd. was awarded by the Indian government to manufacture 100,000 units of the low-cost computer, to be tested out by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajasthan.
Ministry officials said IIT-Rajasthan will conduct field trials in different parts of the country, at different times and under different weather conditions, to gauge the efficiency of the computers. If the computers pass the field tests, the government will procure 1 million units in the first phase.
The $35 laptop is actually a government project of India, to boost the technology education for undergraduate and postgraduate students across the country. It’s not clear yet if the said low-cost tablet will also be made available outside India.
Surely, I will let you know the updates!
