On the past few days, rumors have been spreading on Facebook about a new virus called “Knob Face”, but fortunately – Graham Cluley at Sophos was able to break down the truth about such worm.
The Facebook Knob Face Virus is a perfect HOAX, which appears to be a spelling error of the family of malware called Koobface.
One example of wall updates you would notice in Facebook reads:
“Virus spreading like wildfire on Facebook!! It is a Trojan worm called “Knob Face”. It will steal your info, invade your system and shut it down! DO NOT open the link “Barack Obama Clinton scandal”. If “Smartgirl 15″ adds you, don’t accept it; it is a virus. If somebody on your list adds her then you will get the virus too!! Copy and paste to your wall please”
Knob Face is actually not a virus or a Trojan worm. There is a family of malware called Koobface, but it seems “Knob Face” is an unfortunate spelling mistake. Cluley added that it is possible for malware authors to hide their attacks disguised as sex videos of the rather unlikely coupling of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The warning about adding a friend named “Smartgirl 15” is also a hoax.
If you happen to read similar wall updates or some of your friends send you message about Knob Face, just ignore them. Don’t share the same message in your Facebook wall as it will go viral. Just make sure your anti-virus is up to date instead.
