HTC Treats Japan with 5-Incher HTC J Butterfly Phablet

HTC has finally unveiled its own smartphone and tablet hybrid device that will get head to head with this year’s line of “Phablets” like Samsung GALAXY Note 2, LG Optimus Vu, Panasonic Eluga Power, and among others. Named as HTC J Butterfly, the handset features a 5-inch Super LCD3 display with full HD resolution (1080p), inside its form-factor of 143 x 71 x 9.1mm. The HTC J Butterfly joins the new range of quad-core powered superphones through its Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 processor ticking at 1.5GHz. It has twice as much RAM (2GB) compared to HTC One X with base data space of 16GB and an option to expand storage through the microSD card slot.

The HTC J Butterfly is loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box and supports both LTE and NFC technology. HTC has also decided to make this handset dust and waterproof, which of course adds up to its selling points.

It may be strange however that the handset only has 2,020mAh of power source, but not until we see user-complaints for the battery draining so fast – then I guess power isn’t really an issue on this superphone. (more…)

No Jelly Bean for SE Xperia Arc S, Xperia Mini Pro, & 2011 Xperia Phones

It may be inadvertent or deliberate, but the responses Sony — through its UK Facebook page — thrown to its fans are indicative enough that the latest Android flavour won’t be available to last year’s Xperia phones. UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, John Cooper, had been taking questions on the said Facebook page and specifically mentioned both SE Xperia Arc S and Xperia Mini Pro that it won’t be getting Android 4.1 or Jelly Bean update.

No Android Jelly Bean - Sony Xperia Arc S, Xperia Mini Pro

This announcement is a bit of turn off for Xperia fans, particularly those who own Sony’s flagship phone last year — the SE Xperia Arc S. And now that Sony spilled it has no plans for a Jelly Bean update for Xperia Arc S, it concretely suggests that neither of the 2011 SE Xperia phones will receive Jelly Bean. (more…)

HTC One X, One XL, & One S Android Jelly Bean Upgrade Confirmed!

When HTC Philippines launched the HTC One S here in Cebu just last week, I got an opportunity to ask the company’s country manager if the HTC One line-up can be upgraded to Android Jelly Bean anytime soon. Uncertain of HTC’s plans for such devices (at least for the OS upgrade roadmap), he didn’t confirm yet (perhaps to play it safe) whether HTC is working for a Jelly Bean upgrade or not. It turned out that HTC is indeed working for a firmware update, to which the Taiwan-based smartphone maker has confirmed to Engadget that it will bring Android Jelly Bean to select HTC One handsets which include the One X, One S, and the LTE-capable HTC One XL.

“We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean.”

This statement, however, is still unclear for some users across the globe. And the question remains whether or not the Jelly Bean update applies to other regions outside the US.

For the uninitiated, Jelly Bean is the latest version of Google-owned Android OS, which brings new features with primary focus on enhancing the user interface functionality and performance. (more…)
