South Korea to Launch 5G Network by 2020, Fast Enough to Download a Full Movie in 1 Second

South Korea’s Science Ministry has announced that they are in the works on upgrading the current 4G mobile data speeds to up to 1000 times with the 5G network. The 5G’s trial service is expected to come sometime in 2017 with commercial service by the end of 2020, South Korea is now investing 1.6 trillion Won ($1.5 billion or over Php 66 billion) for speeds up to 1 Gbps that can let users download full length 800 MB movies in just one second.

In a statement, the Korean Science Ministry said that: “We helped fuel national growth with 2G services in the 1990s, 3G in the 2000s and 4G around 2010. Now it is time to take preemptive action to develop 5G.” They also added that “Countries in Europe, China and the US are making aggressive efforts to develop 5G technology…and we believe there will be fierce competition in this market in a few years.”
