We learned about Starmobile as the newest player in the country’s mobile industry when it launched locally new dual-SIM phones back in July. If you guys thought the company would only focus on mobile phones, you got yourselves wrong. The truth is, the company just took its dibs in the tablet business by offering a new 7-incher Android slate running that magnificent Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) flavour. This tablet is none other than the Starmobile Engage!

CTB is very fortunate to have an early hands-on of the Engage. I already have dated with the device yesterday and while I’m still checking its entirety inside and out, allow me to share some of the unboxing pics for your viewing pleasure.

The Starmobile Engage is packed inside a 3-inch thick box showing off its features and hardware specs in all surfaces. Cut the seal with an X-Acto knife, pull up the cover in the frontage, and there you’ll see the tablet on top with plastic wrap and positioned upside down. Starmobile Engage Android Tablet 3 The very first feature I’ve noticed is the 3MP rear camera.

Take the tablet out from its location, remove the next cover through the hole designed for your finger to fit in, and yup – you guessed it right! It’s the accessories.

So what we got in the box?

The 7-inch Engage tablet of course, a pair of plug and USB cable as battery charger, set of headphones, a pair of extra foam cushion for the headphones’ ear bud, the user manual, and the warranty certificate in any case something goes wrong with the tablet.

So far I’m enjoying using the Starmobile Engage. I’m a bit curious how exactly it fair with other Android ICS tablets. On top of the 7-inch capacitive multi-touch display, the specs sheet says it has a 1.2GHz processor, a 1GB RAM, internal storage of 5GB (expandable up to 32GB through microSD), 0.3MP front camera, 3MP rear camera, and 3000mAh battery. It’s Wi-Fi only, but there’s a slot that supports 3G/3.5G Modems or mobile internet dongles. I’ll let you know my final verdict for this tablet once I’m done with the review. Hopefully, I can have it within the week.

Stay tuned!

DEC 25th 2012! I bought two units yesterday at the price of 4,990P each! I wanted to install games before the kids opened their presents, so I tried to do so on the 24th. Farmville installed, but then it would NOT run due to the fact it didn’t have permission to run on Android. After I uninstalled it I could not re-download it. (Magic Jack nor Viber are compatible.) Could NOT get the GLOBE USB 3G Dongle to work at the shop where I bought them. It DID however accept a flash memory USB stick! Very cool!! You will have to go to SETTINGS for Skype to enable the video. Tango works too! (I miss the iPod style HOME BUTTON). Responsiveness isn’t too bad for a unit costing this little. It take a little getting used to it. Back to apps: VLC is in Beta. It didn’t work well. I had to convert Matroska (MKV) files to MP4 files so they could be viewed. Good old Quicktime 7 Pro converts with ease.

    Any questions? Just ask.

UPDATE: Both GLOBE & SMART USB dongles work! For Globe the APN setting has to be changed from INTERNET to HTTP just like it does on an iPhone with a PREPAID SIM. If it’s POSTPAID, INTERNET, not HTTP will work. As for SMART it was a dongle from 2010. The APN was automatically set after inserting the USB dongle into the USB Port.

The kids have downloaded as many free games as there is disk space to house them! The battery lasts about 3 hours of constant use. Would be longer, but kids are kids. 🙂
