Think about it. You are going to have a vacation for few days. You packed everything you need and you already have all the important gadgets with you.
While at your destination, you realize you forgot to bring your mobile phone charger. So what are you going to do? Buy a new charger at the store? That could be an option, but not always practical. Borrow a charger from a friend? What if your mobile phone is not compatible with his charger?
Well, not unless your friend is using a universal mobile phone charger. But wait… Is there any universal cell phone charger already out in the market today? I’m afraid none. There’s good news though, especially for the Europeans.
Starting 2011, Europe will already have a one-size-fits-all charger. Thanks to the European Commission for the efforts. There are 10 major mobile phone makers so far who have signed on to the agreement in harmonizing charging capability of common charger for mobile phones. That includes Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research In Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments.
Having a universal mobile phone charger means that, consumers wouldn’t need to buy a new charger together with a new mobile phone. In addition to this, consumers will benefit from more efficient and cheaper stand-alone chargers.
Once this new device is out in Europe by 2011, most likely it would also be available in the US or in Asia. What do you think?
